And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. Matt 17:1-2 ESV
Throughout scripture we see examples of God revealing himself to His people on a mountaintop. The Lord brought the law to Moses on Mount Sinai. Elijah experienced Him through a still small voice on mount Horeb. Jesus was transfigured before His closest three disciples on the top of Mount Tabor. This experience gave these men a new perspective and deeper insight into who Christ really is.
Mountaintop experiences have the power to change our perspective and bring fresh insight and vision. This past summer, my son Joshua and I traveled to the top of a 12,500 foot peak in New Mexico with a group of men from our church. When we got to the top, Joshua found a small depression in the ground and began to build a small rock shelter. The two of us quickly stacked up a low circular wall and sat inside and just talked about the beauty of the place and the journey we had just accomplished. I had been to that very spot several times, but had never seen it through Joshua’s eyes. I was struck by his excitement and joy in the simple act of stacking a few rocks on-top of each other. I was reminded of Peter’s suggestion to build tabernacles on Tabor long ago.
Frequently on our trips participants will share that God spoke to them in a unique and personal way at the summit of a peak after a long hike. Often there is a burden or a problem they have been dealing with, and God gives them a fresh perspective. When we see things from above and are surrounded by the beauty of creation, our problems seem to melt away, and we get a sense of just how mighty and powerful our Creator is.
One of the great joys I have in leading trips with Ascend is the opportunity to take groups into the wilderness where they can hear more clearly from God. God is still revealing Himself on mountaintops to his people in exciting and refreshing ways. It is a such a blessing to be a part of a ministry that God uses to touch people in such profound and life-changing ways. It is my prayer that you too would be lead to find a place away from the maddening crowd where you can gain some fresh perspective from God.
